Unsalty Salt (Matthew 5:13)

Why did Jesus compare His followers to salt? What is unique about salt that makes it a good metaphor for the lives of true disciples? Can salt lose its flavor? If we are going to have a proper understanding of Jesus’ teachings, we must understand the comparisons that He used to talk about His disciples. Without this understanding, it will be impossible for us to evaluate our own lives to see if we are living lives that fit His descriptions of a true disciple.

The truth is that salt played a significant role in the Old Testament worship of God. Using this as a backdrop for His analogy, Jesus compared His disciples to salt. By understanding the backdrop, we can gain a robust understanding of how we should live as modern-day Kingdom followers.
