When everything falls apart, how do you respond? When your circumstances are dire—hopeless even—how do you act? Esther was ripped from her home and placed in the harem of a pagan king. Her future, gone. Her hopes and dreams, shattered. Her freedom turned into lifelong slavery.

Yet out of this horrific situation, Scripture shows us two things. First, that God is sovereign over all things—that no matter what situation He calls His people into, He has an overarching plan for them. Second, that obedience requires us to look beyond our circumstances to the sovereign and all‑powerful God who loves us. The God who is our Father. The God who has promised to be with us.

Obedience becomes impossible when we fix our eyes on our circumstances instead of on Him. God has not called His people to live for themselves but for Him. The story of Esther puts this reality on full display. Her response to her circumstances shows us how we should act when we walk through trials, and it pulls back the curtain just enough to reveal that God is constantly working behind the scenes to accomplish His will and bless His children—no matter how dark the path He calls them to walk.
